In Solok Regency, precisely the Alahan Panjang region, West Sumatra, there are two lakes that have an area and water level that is almost the same, both lakes are Lake Above and Lake Below or better known as Twin Lakes.

It is not one but two highland lakes which are the main attractions here. The Lakes of Danau Diatas or Danau Diateh (Lake Above) and Danau Dibawah (Lake Below) are beautiful natural wonders separated by only a few hundred meters.

Located over 1000 meters above sea level, the lakes are covered with a thick mist giving them an eerie beauty. The soil surrounding the lakes comes from volcanic ash from eruptions of Mount Talang.

Come here to relax and take in some spectacularly unique scenery. Walk around and take in the superb view of the cool clear lakes against a mountain backdrop.

Although it is said to be twins, it turns out that these two lakes have contrasting differences between them, if Lake Above is upstream from the Batanghari River which divides Sumatra Island and empties into the Malacca Strait, so people know where Lake Above water flows.

Different from the Lake Below which goes up to it is not yet known exactly where the water from Lake Below is flowed because it does not meet the river that tipped in this lake.

However, some residents who live around Lake Dibawah believe that there are underground rivers that drain water from Lake Dibawah and emerge in Jambi, but this has not been scientifically proven.

Another difference is about the depths of the two lakes, Lake Above is a lake that is categorized as shallow, the deepest point of the lake is only 44 meters, it is different from Lake Below whose deepest point is at 884 meters from the water level, a depth that is somewhat scary for a the lake, even the people around there did not dare to bring a boat to the middle of the lake.
